What is a Blunt Paper?

Traditional blunt paper is made from tobacco. It can be either raw tobacco leaf or a blunt paper, made from highly pressed tobacco leaves. Therefore, it is still pure tobacco.

In order to better understand what blunt paper truly is, what are its origins and how smoking it is different from joints or spliffs we would need to venture to the past, starting in Pamir mountains.

From stone brazier to palm blunt paper.

Around 2 500 years ago in ancient China people started using cannabis recreationally. Hemp was cultivated much earlier but it was used mainly in medicine and manufacturing of ropes and clothes thanks to its unique fibers. The Chinese used stone braziers to smoke their herb, which were discovered in 2019 by group of researchers. Chemical analysis discovered that each brazier has strong chemical “footprint” of THC.

As much as scientists suspect that hemp might have been smoked for recreational purposes, wrapped in a leaf of palm or other plant; it is hard to prove it due to the biodegradability of leaves.

As the tombs in which the braziers were encountered were located by the silk road it is believed that from there hemp was distributed to the rest of the world. It reached India, nomadic tribes of central Asia brought it to Europe and Hindi merchants introduced it in the middle east and Africa.

The THC content of most cannabis strains back then was really low, people were commonly using it for clothing in the whole Old World. Smoking hemp was more popular in middle east, in form of hashish, Ethiopians invented stone pipes and Indians used to make food infused with this herb.

Thereby generally smoking any plant back than wasn´t a popular concept. Unless until the moment in which Christopher Columbus ventured to the America for the first time. He encountered natives smoking tobacco in a form of cigars or through pipes and brought it to Europe. It became widely popular worldwide and even believed to have health benefits.

A blunt is kind of a cigar so its history should be linked together. First cigars were smoked around 10th century in Guatemala as we know from depictions on ceramic pots. The western world has started smoking the cigars in 18th century. They were brought to USA from Cuba, as this way of smoking tobacco have been popular on Caribbean for ages.

It became luxury product associated with prestige, status and affiliation with upper class. The blunts as we know them today were firstly invented in 80s in cities such as Philadelphia, New York or Baltimore. People would buy regular cigars, remove their content and fill it with cannabis. When the cigar making company called “Phillies” heard of this trend, it decided to adapt and introduced new type of cigars called “blunts”.

The Blunts were wider than Cigarillos but narrower than Corona. They became very popular due to its price (they were machine rolled), comfort and discreetness. It was simple to remove the tobacco inside and it looked exactly like normal cigar. Some people also enjoyed the feeling of dizziness provided by high tobacco content.

Raising health concerns abouts effects of tobacco in blunts have resulted in first tobacco free blunt papers. King Palm was the first company in the world to develop them and is right now a dominant player in the market. People can now smoke hemp in the way that’s natural, in the way that is believed to be used by many ancient civilizations and tribes.

Blunt vs joint.

The main difference between these two is the material that holds the hemp inside. Blunts traditionally are wrapped with tobacco leaf/pressed tobacco paper. Joints are wrapped in rolling paper, similar to the one used for cigarettes. Let’s have a closer look at them.

Joint vs spliff.

To the joint “family” you can also add a spliff. It is also wrapped in rolling paper but here the difference is the content, as spliff contains tobacco mixed with another herb while joint is always tobacco free. Both are good for smokers that like to enjoy the plant alone or in a small group of friends, due to the small size of rolling paper. These two are the most popular ways of smoking.

Blunt vs Palm wrap

Blunt is more extravagant than joint or spliff, it can hold big number of flowers, being able to cater for larger groups. Ideal for parties. The only problem with it is tobacco content. That is why King Palm developed tobacco free palm wraps. These pre rolled cones are made from palm leaf, they are 100% natural and organic. In addition, they have corn husk filter that not only cool down the smoke but also contains food grade flavored capsule.
